It might be tough to know what to say to someone who is dying and when to say it. You could feel uneasy or uncertain about how to communicate. In this situation, these are all normal emotions.

As providers of hospice and palliative care in California, we understand the end-of-life journey and what it entails for both terminally ill individual and their loved ones. The following tips help communicate with a dying person.

  • Tip #1: Take the Dying Person’s Lead

Every person approaches death differently. It is up to the person whether or not they wish to discuss death and with whom. Remember that it’s absolutely fine if they don’t want to talk about their death, but you should make them feel at ease doing so nevertheless.

  • Tip #2: It’s Okay to Express Yourself Honestly

It is alright to be genuine and convey your emotions when speaking to a dying loved one. Whether it means crying, remaining silent, or questioning why. Don’t, however, burden them with your concerns about what will happen when they’re gone. Express yourself while remaining sensitive to their end-of-life experience.

  • Tip #3: Touch also Communicates

When conversing with someone who is dying, your words touch each other. When words are no longer possible, touch can still be used to connect. Gently placing your hand on the person’s hand, shoulder, or head is a compassionate way of saying, “I am here.”
